PHARMACOLOGY (HOW TO WORK DRUGS)
Acyclovir (Acyclovir) is an acyclic purine nucleoside analog which is active against the Herpes simplex virus, Varicella zoster, Epstein-Barr and Cytomegalovirus.
In cells, acyclovir undergoes phosphorylation into an active form of acyclovir triphosphate which works to inhibit herpes simplex DNA polymerase virus and viral DNA replication, thus preventing viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cell processes.
INDICATION
Treatment of the herpes simplex virus in the skin and mucous membranes, including initial and recurrent genital herpes.
Treatment of herpes zoster and varicella infections.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Acyclovir should not be given to people who are hypersensitive or allergic to acyclovir antibiotics.
DOSAGE AND RULES FOR USE
Genital herpes infection
Initial genital herpes infections in adults: Acyclovir 200 mg 5 times a day every 4 hours, for 5-10 days. Children under 2 years: 1/2 adult dose. For patients with "immunocompromised" or abnormal absorption in the intestine the dosage can be increased to 400 mg, or alternatively given treatment intravenously. Treatment should be started as early as possible, for recurrence, preferably in the period beginning with the first lesion.
Treatment of suppression of recurrent genital herpes infections: Acyclovir 400 mg 2 times a day or 200 mg 2-5 times a day, for 12 months.
Intermittent treatment of recurrent genital herpes infections: Acyclovir 200 mg 5 times a day every 4 hours, for 5 days.

Treatment must begin as early as possible and at the onset of symptoms of infection.

Some sufferers may experience a "break through" infection with a total dose of 800 mg a day. Treatment should be stopped periodically at intervals of 6 - 12 months with a view to observing possible changes in history.
